Tongue-Tie and Breastfeeding Pain: Why “Just Push Through” Is the Wrong Advice

Parents relieved after resolving baby's breastfeeding pain from tongue-tie

feed, you’re not alone — and breastfeeding pain doesn’t mean you have to just push through it.

Breastfeeding Pain Is Common Advice, But It Isn’t Normal

Nipple pain is one of the most frequently cited reasons mothers stop breastfeeding earlier than they planned. A peer-reviewed review in Breastfeeding Medicine found that nipple pain and damage are usually caused by excessive stretching and mechanical force on the nipple during feeding — often the result of a latch problem, not something moms simply need to toughen up against.

Why “Push Through” Breastfeeding Pain Advice Misses the Point

Telling a mother to push through pain treats the symptom while ignoring the cause. If a tongue-tie is restricting your baby’s tongue movement, no amount of persistence changes the mechanics of the latch. Common signs the pain may be tongue-tie related include:

  • Sharp or stinging pain that continues throughout the whole feed, not just at first latch
  • Nipples that look creased, flattened, or blanched (whitened) after feeding
  • Cracked, bleeding, or scabbed nipples that aren’t healing between feeds
  • A clicking sound as baby’s tongue loses suction repeatedly
  • Pain that hasn’t improved despite trying different positions

You can learn more about how tongue-tie affects feeding on our What Is Tongue-Tie page.

“I’ve had moms apologize for ‘complaining’ about pain that would make anyone cry. Please don’t apologize — pain during breastfeeding is information, not weakness.” — Dr. Gabriela Moffett

What actually helps

If a tongue-tie is confirmed, a gentle laser frenectomy can release the restriction in minutes, with no sedation, no shots, and no stitches — safe even for babies just one day old. Many mothers notice less pain at the very next feed. Details on the procedure are on our newborn frenectomy page.

And if the cause turns out to be something else entirely — positioning, oversupply, or another treatable factor — an evaluation still gets you the answer, and a lactation consultant can help from there.

You don’t have to just survive this

Persistent pain during feeding is never something to simply endure. If something feels wrong, trust that instinct and get it looked at.
