Periodontal disease is often referred to as the “friendly disease” because many symptoms, especially early on, can be completely painless and unnoticeable. Preventable dental care is always most important, but if not accomplished, early detection and treatment is extremely imporant.
Here is Dr. Levine’s list of early signs of periodontal disesases:
1. Bleeding gums is a sign of inflammation. (Lack of bleeding does not mean that you are necessarily healthy; in the chronic long-shanding form of the disease, there may be no bleeding.)
2. Recession of the gum.
3. Overgrowoth of the gum.
4. Mobile teeth.
5. Drifted teeth or the development of spaces.
6. Halitosis, breath malador or bad breath.
7. Discomfort or pain. (There may also be NO discomfort or pain)
