Periodontal Disease and Pregnancy

The Importance of Perinatal Oral Health

precautions for expecting mothers about periodontal disease

Did you know it is suggested to visit the dentist twice as often during pregnancy? That’s right – at least every three months. The control of oral diseases during pregnancy has the potential to reduce the transmission of bacteria from mothers to their children. There have also been studies on the links between periodontal disease and low birth weight babies.

Although further research is being conducted, it has been shown that the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases, including needed dental radiographs and use of local anesthesia, are highly beneficial and are safe and effective during pregnancy. If these can be postponed until after the infant is born, that would be preferable. However, if necessary, treatment is possible.

Please share this information with anyone who this may affect. We invite you to come in for a complimentary periodontal evaluation, prior to your hygiene appointment. Call us today to schedule – 954 603-8728.
